Depending on the specific form involved, affected dogs may initially develop difficulty seeing in dim light before progressively losing vision under brighter conditions.

Owners may first notice hesitation when entering dark rooms, difficulty navigating at night, reluctance to use stairs in poor lighting, or bumping into unfamiliar objects. As retinal degeneration progresses, the pupils may appear persistently dilated and vision can become increasingly impaired.

A working Belgian Malinois may continue running and performing tasks despite discomfort, so the first indication of injury may simply be reduced speed, reluctance to jump, altered stride length, decreased endurance, or a change in performance.

Paw and nail injuries also deserve attention. Dogs working over rough terrain, concrete, rubble, hot surfaces, or other challenging environments may develop abrasions, pad injuries, torn nails, or foreign-body penetration.

Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV): Can Belgian Malinois Develop Bloat?

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a rapidly progressive and potentially fatal emergency in which the stomach becomes distended with gas and may rotate around its axis. Rotation can obstruct normal blood flow, compromise circulation, damage the stomach wall, and rapidly lead to shock.

Belgian Malinois should not automatically be classified among the breeds with the very highest documented GDV risk, but their relatively deep-chested body conformation means owners should still recognize the condition and its emergency warning signs.



GDV can progress extremely quickly. One of the classic signs is repeated attempts to vomit or retch without producing significant material. Dogs may also develop progressive abdominal enlargement, restlessness, excessive salivation, abdominal discomfort, rapid breathing, weakness, pale gums, or collapse.

A dog suspected of having GDV requires immediate emergency veterinary treatment. Waiting to see whether symptoms improve at home can be dangerous because cardiovascular deterioration may occur rapidly.

Diagnosis generally involves physical examination and abdominal radiographs. Emergency stabilization may include intravenous fluids, gastric decompression, cardiovascular support, and other measures, followed by surgery when gastric volvulus is confirmed.
