What Should You Do If You Miss a Dose of Lisinopril?
Take the missed dose when you remember, unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. If the next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule.
Do not take two doses together or take extra lisinopril to compensate for a forgotten tablet. Doubling the dose may cause excessive blood-pressure reduction, dizziness, fainting or kidney-related complications.

How Long Does Lisinopril Take to Work?

Nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
Excessive reduction in blood pressure
Increased creatinine or changes in kidney function
Increased blood potassium
Dizziness is more likely after the first dose, following a dose increase or when the patient is dehydrated or taking a diuretic. Standing up slowly and maintaining appropriate fluid intake may help, unless fluid restriction has been recommended.
A persistent ACE-inhibitor cough is usually dry and does not produce mucus. Patients should discuss troublesome or continuing symptoms with their clinician rather than stopping lisinopril independently. Sudden facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fainting or severe weakness is not a routine side effect and requires urgent medical assessment.
What Are the Serious Side Effects of Lisinopril?
Serious reactions are uncommon but may require immediate treatment. Important warning signs include:
Swelling of the lips, tongue, face or throat
Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Fainting or severe, persistent dizziness
Markedly reduced urine production
Muscle weakness, numbness or an irregular heartbeat
Yellowing of the skin or eyes
Severe abdominal pain, with or without vomiting
Swelling caused by angioedema can obstruct the airway and is a medical emergency. It may occur shortly after the first dose or after months or years of apparently uneventful treatment. Lisinopril must not be taken again unless a qualified clinician determines otherwise.
Severe hypotension, acute kidney injury, dangerously high potassium and rare liver reactions are other important risks. Urgent assessment is necessary if severe symptoms develop, particularly after dehydration, a dose increase or the addition of another medication.
Can Lisinopril Cause a Persistent Dry Cough?
Yes. A persistent, dry and irritating cough is a recognised effect of lisinopril and other ACE inhibitors. It is thought to result partly from the accumulation of bradykinin and related substances in the respiratory tract.
The cough may start within hours of the first dose or appear weeks or months later. It is typically non-productive and often becomes more noticeable at night. However, infections, asthma, acid reflux and heart failure can produce similar symptoms, so lisinopril should not automatically be assumed to be the cause.
ACE-inhibitor cough is generally not dangerous, but it can be disruptive. Patients should not discontinue treatment without consulting their clinician. If lisinopril is responsible, the cough usually improves after withdrawal, although complete resolution may take several weeks. Who Should Not Take Lisinopril?
Lisinopril should not be used by people who:
Have previously experienced angioedema caused by lisinopril or another ACE inhibitor
Have hereditary or unexplained recurrent angioedema
Are allergic to lisinopril or any ingredient in the product
Have diabetes and are taking aliskiren
Have taken sacubitril/valsartan within the previous 36 hours
Additional assessment is required for patients with kidney disease, high potassium, low blood pressure, dehydration, severe aortic stenosis or narrowing of the renal arteries. People receiving dialysis or medicines that affect kidney function or potassium may require closer monitoring.
A history of angioedema, current medications and possible pregnancy should always be disclosed before treatment. Suitability must be determined individually rather than based only on the patient’s blood-pressure reading.
Is Lisinopril Safe During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding?
Lisinopril must not be used during pregnancy. Drugs that act on the renin–angiotensin system can injure or kill the developing fetus, particularly during the second and third trimesters. Potential complications include impaired fetal kidney development, low amniotic fluid, skull or lung abnormalities, dangerously low blood pressure and death.
