Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) deserves particular attention because Maine Coons are among the cat breeds with a recognized genetic predisposition to this disease. Hip dysplasia is another concern, especially given the breed’s large skeletal structure. Inherited conditions such as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKDef) are also relevant because genetic testing is available for these disorders.
Fortunately, predisposition does not mean that every Maine Coon will develop these diseases. Responsible breeding, appropriate genetic and clinical screening, maintaining a healthy body weight, good nutrition, regular veterinary examinations, and early recognition of symptoms can help reduce health risks or identify disease at an earlier stage.

The most important point for owners is that some serious diseases may produce few or no obvious symptoms during their early stages. A Maine Coon that appears healthy may still benefit from appropriate health screening, particularly when there is a known family history of inherited disease.

Most Common Diseases Maine Coon Cats Are Prone To
Not every condition seen in Maine Coons is genuinely breed-specific. However, several diseases deserve greater attention because research, breed-health programs, or genetic evidence indicate an increased or clinically important risk in this breed.
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)
HCM is one of the most important diseases associated with Maine Coons. It causes abnormal thickening of the heart muscle, particularly the walls of the left ventricle. Some affected cats remain asymptomatic for long periods, while others can eventually develop congestive heart failure, arterial thromboembolism, or other serious complications.
A known MYBPC3 variant associated with HCM has been identified in Maine Coons. However, genetic testing alone cannot determine whether an individual cat currently has HCM or guarantee that a genetically negative cat will never develop it. Cardiac evaluation—particularly echocardiography when indicated—therefore remains important.
Hip Dysplasia
Although hip dysplasia is commonly associated with dogs, it also occurs in cats, and Maine Coons are an important breed in which the condition should be considered. Abnormal development or poor congruence of the hip joint can eventually contribute to discomfort and osteoarthritis.
Affected cats may become less willing to jump, climb stairs, run, or play. Because cats often conceal chronic pain, changes in activity can be more noticeable than obvious limping.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)
SMA is an inherited neuromuscular disorder recognized in Maine Coons. It causes degeneration of motor neurons responsible for controlling skeletal muscles.
Affected kittens can develop muscle weakness, muscle wasting, an abnormal gait, and difficulty jumping. The condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, making genetic testing particularly valuable in responsible breeding programs.
Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKDef)
PKDef is another inherited disorder for which Maine Coons can be genetically tested. Deficiency of the pyruvate kinase enzyme shortens the lifespan of red blood cells and can result in hemolytic anemia.
Clinical severity can vary, and affected cats may show lethargy, weakness, pale mucous membranes, reduced exercise tolerance, or other signs associated with anemia.
Other Health Problems
As Maine Coons age, owners should also pay attention to obesity, osteoarthritis, dental disease, and urinary tract disorders. These problems are not necessarily unique to the breed, but their consequences can substantially affect quality of life.
The distinction is important: describing every disease reported in Maine Coons as a “Maine Coon disease” would exaggerate the breed's risk. The strongest emphasis should remain on conditions with meaningful evidence of genetic or breed-associated predisposition, particularly HCM, hip dysplasia, and inherited disorders such as SMA and PKDef.
In the next two sections, we can go much deeper into HCM and the MYBPC3 mutation, which I think should be the strongest scientific part of this article.

Maine Coon HCM Genetics: What Does the MYBPC3 Mutation Mean?
Maine Coons are particularly interesting from a genetic perspective because researchers have identified a breed-associated mutation in MYBPC3, the gene encoding cardiac myosin-binding protein C.
The specific variant commonly tested in Maine Coons is known as MYBPC3-A31P. This variant is associated with an increased risk of developing HCM and is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with incomplete penetrance.
“Incomplete penetrance” is extremely important for owners to understand. Having the mutation does not mean that a cat will inevitably develop clinically significant HCM. Conversely, a Maine Coon that tests negative for this particular mutation is not guaranteed to remain free of HCM.
UC Davis specifically notes that HCM has also been identified in Maine Coons without the A31P mutation. In other words, this known mutation is an important risk factor, but it does not explain every case of HCM within the breed.
Understanding Maine Coon HCM Genetic Test Results

According to the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, Maine Coons carrying one copy of the variant have been estimated to have approximately 1.8 times the risk of HCM compared with cats without the variant, while cats carrying two copies have approximately 18 times the risk. Cats with two copies are therefore considered at particularly high risk.
However, these numbers should not be interpreted as a simple prediction of an individual cat's future. Genetics represents only part of the HCM picture.
Why a Negative DNA Test Does Not Mean “HCM-Free”
This is perhaps the most important takeaway for Maine Coon owners and breeders:
A negative MYBPC3-A31P genetic test does not rule out hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
The currently available test detects a specific mutation associated with increased HCM risk in Maine Coons. Other genetic influences—and potentially additional factors that are not yet completely understood—may contribute to disease development.
Therefore:
DNA testing = genetic risk assessment
Echocardiography = evaluation of the actual heart
The two methods complement each other rather than replace one another. This distinction is particularly important when evaluating breeding Maine Coons or cats with a family history of HCM.
For owners, difficulty breathing, open-mouth breathing, collapse, or sudden painful weakness/paralysis of the hind limbs should be treated as urgent veterinary warning signs, regardless of previous genetic-test results.

Hip Dysplasia: An Important Orthopedic Problem in Maine Coons
Hip dysplasia is an important orthopedic condition to consider among common Maine Coon health problems. Although many people associate hip dysplasia primarily with large-breed dogs, cats can also develop the condition, and Maine Coons have received particular attention because of their large body size and documented occurrence of hip dysplasia within the breed.
Hip dysplasia occurs when the femoral head and the hip socket do not fit together normally. Excessive joint laxity and abnormal joint mechanics can gradually damage cartilage and contribute to degenerative joint disease and osteoarthritis.
Maine Coon health programs specifically recognize hip dysplasia as a breeding concern. PawPeds, for example, recommends hip evaluation of Maine Coons before they are used for breeding and describes feline hip dysplasia as a complex inherited trait involving multiple genes.
Signs of Hip Dysplasia in Maine Coons
Cats are particularly good at hiding orthopedic pain. A Maine Coon with hip dysplasia may therefore not show the obvious limping that owners often expect.
Possible signs include:
Reluctance to jump onto furniture or high surfaces
Reduced jumping height
Difficulty climbing stairs
Stiffness after resting
Reduced activity or play
Changes in the way the cat walks or runs
Hesitation before jumping
Difficulty grooming the rear part of the body
Irritability when the hips or lower back are touched

Some cats compensate extremely well, meaning significant joint abnormalities may exist before an owner recognizes a problem.
How Is Hip Dysplasia Diagnosed?
Diagnosis generally combines the cat's clinical history, orthopedic examination, and hip radiographs. Sedation or anesthesia may be required to obtain appropriately positioned radiographs.
Radiographs can reveal abnormalities such as poor congruence between the femoral head and acetabulum, joint remodeling, or secondary osteoarthritis.

For breeding populations, the issue goes beyond managing an individual cat. Because inheritance is complex, health programs emphasize screening across generations rather than relying solely on the apparent health of the parents.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA): An Inherited Neuromuscular Disease
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is one of the most distinctive inherited diseases associated with Maine Coon cats. Unlike hip dysplasia, which primarily affects joints, SMA is a neuromuscular disease caused by degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord.
These neurons are responsible for transmitting signals that allow skeletal muscles to function normally. As motor neurons are lost, affected kittens develop progressive muscle weakness and muscle atrophy, particularly involving the hind limbs.
According to the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, clinical signs typically begin when affected Maine Coon kittens are approximately 3–4 months old.
Owners may notice:
An unusual or unsteady gait
Hind-limb weakness
Trembling or shaking
Progressive muscle wasting
Abnormal posture
Difficulty jumping

Importantly, UC Davis describes Maine Coon SMA as non-painful and non-fatal, although it can produce significant physical disability. Affected cats may still live comfortable indoor lives with appropriate environmental management.
How Is SMA Inherited in Maine Coons?
SMA is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. This means that a Maine Coon must inherit two copies of the disease-associated variant—one from each parent—to be affected.

This makes SMA very different from Maine Coon HCM from a breeding perspective. The known Maine Coon HCM-associated MYBPC3 variant behaves as an autosomal dominant risk variant with incomplete penetrance, whereas SMA requires two copies of its disease-associated mutation for the disease to occur.
Why Genetic Testing Is So Valuable
A carrier Maine Coon can appear completely healthy. Without genetic testing, an owner or breeder may have no indication that the cat carries the SMA-associated variant.
DNA testing can identify clear, carrier, and affected cats before breeding. This allows breeders to make informed mating decisions and avoid producing affected kittens while also managing genetic diversity responsibly. UC Davis specifically notes that identifying carriers and affected cats through testing can help prevent matings capable of producing kittens with SMA.
This is one of the clearest examples of how genetic screening can directly reduce the incidence of an inherited disease in Maine Coons.
Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKDef): A Genetic Blood Disorder
Pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKDef) is an inherited blood disorder that deserves attention when discussing common Maine Coon health problems. The condition results from insufficient activity of pyruvate kinase, an enzyme that plays an essential role in energy production within red blood cells.
Without adequate pyruvate kinase activity, red blood cells become unstable and are destroyed prematurely. This process can lead to hemolytic anemia, meaning the body loses red blood cells faster than it can adequately replace them. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory includes Maine Coons among the breeds appropriate for PK deficiency genetic testing and reports that the responsible mutation has been identified at meaningful frequency within the breed.
One particularly important feature of PKDef is its variability. Anemia can be intermittent, the age at which symptoms develop can vary, and affected cats do not necessarily show the same degree of illness.
Signs of PKDef in Maine Coons

Because the anemia may fluctuate, an affected Maine Coon may experience periods when symptoms are more noticeable and periods when the cat appears relatively normal.
How Is PKDef Inherited?
PKDef is inherited as an autosomal recessive condition. A cat generally needs two copies of the disease-associated variant to be affected. Cats carrying only one copy are typically clinically unaffected carriers.

This makes genetic screening particularly useful in breeding Maine Coons. A healthy-looking cat can be a carrier, so appearance and routine physical examination cannot establish genetic status.
Importantly, identifying a carrier does not automatically mean that the cat must be removed from every breeding program. The critical objective is to avoid carrier-to-carrier matings that could produce affected kittens, while breeding decisions should also consider genetic diversity and the overall health of the population.
Arthritis and Joint Problems in Large Maine Coon Cats
Osteoarthritis, also called degenerative joint disease (DJD), is characterized by progressive deterioration of structures within a joint. It can result in chronic pain, stiffness, reduced mobility, and behavioral changes.
Arthritis becomes increasingly important as cats age. Cornell notes that feline DJD frequently affects joints including the shoulders, elbows, knees, wrists, and hips and that age is an important contributing factor.
For Maine Coons, there is an additional consideration: hip dysplasia can lead to secondary osteoarthritis.
In a large study using Orthopedic Foundation for Animals registry data, 635 of 2,548 non-borderline Maine Coons evaluated were classified as having feline hip dysplasia—approximately 24.9% of that particular screened population. The authors cautioned against extrapolating this registry prevalence directly to all Maine Coons, but the findings demonstrate why hip health deserves attention in the breed.
Signs of Arthritis in Maine Coons
Cats with arthritis frequently do not display dramatic lameness. Instead, owners may notice subtle changes in everyday behavior.

Protecting a Maine Coon's Joints
Maintaining an appropriate body condition is one of the most practical measures owners can take. Excess weight increases pressure on weight-bearing joints and is associated with greater joint problems in cats.
For a Maine Coon already experiencing mobility problems, environmental modifications can also make everyday life easier. Low-entry litter boxes, strategically positioned steps or ramps, accessible food and water, comfortable resting areas, and non-slip surfaces can reduce unnecessary strain.
Persistent changes in jumping, walking, grooming, or activity should not simply be dismissed as “getting old.” They may indicate chronic orthopedic pain that deserves veterinary evaluation.
Diseases Maine Coons May Be More Resistant To
When discussing common Maine Coon health problems, the idea of disease “resistance” requires careful interpretation.
There is currently no strong scientific basis for claiming that Maine Coons are naturally immune to particular major feline diseases simply because of their breed. A Maine Coon can still develop infectious diseases, cancer, kidney disease, diabetes, endocrine disorders, dental disease, and many other conditions that affect the wider feline population.
Therefore, “more resistant” should mean a lower documented breed predisposition—not immunity.
What Does Disease Resistance Actually Mean?
Breed-associated disease risk exists on a spectrum:
Higher predisposition → average/background risk → potentially lower reported predisposition
Being on the lower end does not mean risk is zero.
For example, the strongest health concerns associated with Maine Coons include conditions such as:
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)
Hip dysplasia
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)

By comparison, several disorders strongly associated with other breeds are not recognized as defining Maine Coon health problems.

The distinction is useful because it prevents owners from assuming that every inherited feline disease carries the same risk in every breed.
Are Maine Coons Generally Healthy Cats?
Many Maine Coons can live healthy lives, particularly when they come from responsibly screened breeding lines and receive appropriate preventive veterinary care.
Their genetic health profile also illustrates one advantage of modern breeding programs: several important inherited risks can now be investigated before breeding.
However, apparent robustness should never replace preventive care. Vaccination, parasite prevention when appropriate, dental care, weight management, veterinary examinations, and age-appropriate screening remain important even for a Maine Coon with negative genetic tests.
Most importantly, a cat testing negative for SMA, PKDef, or the known Maine Coon HCM-associated variant should not be described as genetically “clear of all Maine Coon diseases.” Each DNA test evaluates specific variants, and many diseases are influenced by additional genes, age, environment, and other factors.
So in this article, resistance means absence of a known strong predisposition—not biological protection from disease. This wording keeps the “prone to and resistant to” concept useful without overstating what breed genetics can tell us.
Genetic Testing for Maine Coons: HCM, SMA, and PKDef
Genetic testing has become an important part of responsible Maine Coon breeding because several inherited conditions affecting the breed have identifiable genetic variants. The three tests owners and breeders are most likely to encounter are those related to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKDef).
However, genetic tests need to be interpreted correctly. A DNA result does not provide a complete health assessment of a Maine Coon, and this is particularly important for HCM.

HCM Genetic Testing Requires Special Interpretation
The HCM test deserves the most caution.
The known MYBPC3-A31P variant is associated with increased HCM risk in Maine Coons. However, not every cat carrying the variant develops clinically significant disease, and HCM also occurs in Maine Coons that do not carry this particular variant.
Therefore:
Negative HCM DNA test ≠ HCM-free cat
Likewise:
Positive HCM DNA test ≠ definitive clinical diagnosis of HCM
The DNA test assesses inherited risk associated with a particular variant. Echocardiography evaluates whether structural heart disease is actually present.
For this reason, genetic testing should complement rather than replace appropriate cardiac screening.
SMA and PKDef Testing Is Different
SMA and PKDef are autosomal recessive disorders. Cats carrying one copy of the respective disease-associated variant are generally carriers rather than clinically affected animals.
This distinction allows breeders to use genetic results when planning matings.
For two carriers of the same autosomal recessive disorder:
Approximately 25% of offspring are expected to be affected.
Approximately 50% are expected to be carriers.
Approximately 25% are expected to inherit neither disease-associated copy.
Importantly, responsible genetic management does not necessarily require immediately removing every carrier from the breeding population. Carefully pairing carriers with genetically clear cats can prevent affected kittens while helping preserve genetic diversity.
The goal of genetic testing should therefore be healthier breeding decisions—not simply eliminating as many cats as possible based on a single DNA result.

A Maine Coon's health priorities change throughout life. Genetic disorders may become apparent during kittenhood, while HCM can emerge later and degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis become increasingly relevant with age.

This is also an important period for establishing healthy nutrition. Maine Coons mature slowly compared with many cats, but this should not be interpreted as a reason to encourage excessive weight gain.
Young and Middle-Aged Adults
Cardiac health becomes particularly important during adulthood.
A Maine Coon may have HCM without obvious symptoms, which is why apparently excellent exercise tolerance does not necessarily exclude cardiac disease.
Dental disease, obesity, hip discomfort, and early osteoarthritis can also begin becoming clinically relevant during adulthood.
Senior Maine Coons
As Maine Coons enter their senior years, health monitoring should broaden beyond breed-associated inherited diseases.
